Severe Service Valve Manufacturer

WDL Valve supplies engineered valve configurations for high temperature, cryogenic, corrosive, abrasive, toxic, oxygen, vacuum and high-cycle duties. Selection begins with the real operating envelope, then matches valve design, materials, seating, packing, actuation and testing to the application.

What Makes a Valve “Severe Service”?

A valve becomes severe service when the combination of fluid, pressure, temperature, differential pressure, cycling frequency, leakage risk or material compatibility creates a higher probability of erosion, corrosion, galling, cavitation, flashing, fugitive emissions or premature seal failure.

The same nominal valve may be suitable in one line and unreliable in another. A complete review should consider startup, shutdown, cleaning and upset conditions in addition to normal operation.

Representative Severe Service Configurations

Selection by Failure Mechanism

Corrosion: review every wetted and pressure-retaining material, not only the body. Chlorides, acids, reducing conditions and galvanic couples may require duplex, titanium, nickel alloys or other special materials.

Erosion and solids: consider flow path, velocity, hard-facing, seat protection and the location of throttling.

Temperature: check pressure-temperature rating, differential thermal expansion, seat limits, packing temperature and bonnet arrangement.

Emissions and toxic media: evaluate bellows seals, qualified packing, stem finish, live loading and inspection requirements.

High cycling: calculate operating torque through the complete pressure range and define actuator sizing, cycle rate and required life.

Project Information Required

  • Fluid name, concentration, phase and solids content.
  • Normal, minimum, maximum and upset pressure and temperature.
  • Maximum differential pressure at opening, closing and throttling.
  • Valve size, end connection, pressure class and face-to-face requirement.
  • Required body, trim, seat, packing and fastener materials.
  • Leakage class, flow direction, cycle frequency and expected service life.
  • Actuator supply, control signal, fail position and closing time.
  • Applicable project standards, inspection, NDE, testing and documentation.

For applications where leakage control is central, see the Low Emission Valve Selection guide.

Industries and Systems

Severe service requirements occur in LNG, oil and gas, petrochemical, fine chemical, power generation, mining slurry, metallurgy, pulp and paper, desalination and specialty gas systems. Browse WDL Valve application guides to connect the valve design with the process duty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a special alloy enough to solve severe service?

No. Material compatibility is only one part of the design. Seat geometry, flow path, surface hardening, packing, actuation, installation and testing may be equally important.

Can one valve cover normal and upset conditions?

Only after the full envelope is reviewed. The selected valve and actuator must remain within their pressure-temperature and torque limits under the worst credible condition.

How does WDL Valve prepare a recommendation?

The review starts with service data and project requirements, then identifies the proposed valve type, materials, seat and packing system, operation method and testing scope for quotation.
