Titanium Butterfly Valve for Corrosive Process Systems
该 WDL Titanium Butterfly Valve is designed for flow isolation
and control in systems where conventional stainless steel valves may suffer
from pitting, crevice corrosion or rapid material loss. Titanium develops a
stable protective oxide film that can reform after minor surface damage when
sufficient oxygen or another oxidizing agent is present.
WDL supplies titanium butterfly valves in wafer, lugged and double-flanged
configurations. Available designs include concentric soft-seated valves,
high-performance double-offset valves and triple-offset metal-seated valves.
The final construction is selected according to the fluid composition,
concentration, operating temperature, pressure, required shutoff class and
frequency of operation.
Why Is Titanium Used for Butterfly Valves?
Titanium combines low density with useful mechanical strength and strong
resistance to many chloride-bearing and oxidizing media. This makes a
titanium butterfly valve suitable for seawater, brine, desalination and
selected chemical processes where corrosion allowance alone cannot provide
an acceptable service life.
- Strong resistance to seawater and many chloride-bearing solutions
- Lower weight than many nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloys
- Protective oxide film with self-passivating behavior
- Good strength-to-weight ratio for large valve discs
- Smooth wetted surfaces that can reduce product adhesion
- Available for soft-seated and metal-seated valve designs
- Suitable for manual, pneumatic and electric actuation
Available Titanium Grades
WDL can manufacture wetted components from titanium Grades 2, 3, 5, 7 and
12. The grade should not be selected by pressure rating alone. Chemical
composition, chloride level, pH, temperature, flow velocity and possible
crevice conditions must also be reviewed.
| Titanium grade | General characteristics | Typical valve use |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 | Commercially pure titanium with a practical balance of corrosion resistance, formability and strength. | Commonly specified for bodies, discs and wetted components in seawater, brine and oxidizing chemical services. |
| Grade 3 | Commercially pure titanium with higher strength than Grade 2. | Used where additional mechanical strength is required and the chemical compatibility has been confirmed. |
| Grade 5 | Titanium alloy with high mechanical strength. | Often considered for shafts, stems and highly loaded components. Media compatibility must be checked separately. |
| Grade 7 | Palladium-alloyed titanium with improved resistance in certain reducing acidic environments. | Selected chemical processes where Grade 2 may not provide the required corrosion margin. |
| Grade 12 | Nickel-molybdenum titanium alloy with increased strength and improved resistance under some crevice conditions. | Hot chloride solutions, brine systems and applications requiring higher mechanical performance. |

Applications of Titanium Butterfly Valves
Titanium butterfly valves are commonly selected for industrial systems
exposed to chlorides, seawater or oxidizing chemicals. WDL reviews the
complete operating data before confirming the titanium grade, seat material
and valve design.
- 海水取水和冷却水系统
- Reverse-osmosis desalination and brine discharge lines
- Chlor-alkali and sodium hypochlorite processing
- Nitric acid and selected oxidizing chemical services
- Fine chemical and pharmaceutical production
- Fertilizer and inorganic salt processing
- Mining process water and chloride-bearing slurry systems
- Marine and offshore utility pipelines
Important Media Selection Notes
Titanium is not universally resistant to every acid or chemical. Dry
chlorine, strongly reducing acids and media with insufficient oxidizing
conditions require a separate corrosion review. Slurry service also
requires evaluation of particle size, solids concentration, velocity and
abrasion because corrosion resistance does not automatically provide
resistance to erosion.
For accurate valve selection, provide the medium composition,
concentration, operating and design temperatures, operating and design
pressures, pipeline size, flange standard, required shutoff performance
以及执行器的要求。
常见问题解答
Which titanium grade is normally used for a butterfly valve?
Grade 2 is a common starting point for seawater, brine and many oxidizing
media. Grade 7 or Grade 12 may be considered when the process has more
demanding acidic, thermal or crevice-corrosion conditions.
Can WDL supply wafer and lugged titanium butterfly valves?
Yes. WDL can supply wafer, lugged and double-flanged titanium butterfly
valves. The connection type is selected according to the pipeline standard,
maintenance requirements and whether downstream pipe isolation is required.
Can a titanium butterfly valve be used for slurry?
A titanium butterfly valve can be considered for corrosive slurry, but the
disc, seat and flow velocity must be reviewed for erosion. Titanium solves
corrosion problems but may require additional seat or trim protection in
highly abrasive service.
What information is required for a quotation?
Please provide the valve size, pressure class, medium composition,
concentration, temperature, flange standard, seat requirement, actuator
type and quantity. WDL will evaluate the material and configuration before
preparing the quotation.
