Description

Nickel 200/201 Butterfly Valve

The WDL Nickel Butterfly Valve is manufactured for caustic
alkali, reducing chemicals and selected neutral process media. Nickel 200
and Nickel 201 are commercially pure nickel grades used where ordinary
stainless steel may experience unacceptable corrosion or contamination.

WDL supplies nickel butterfly valves in wafer, lugged and double-flanged
configurations. Available designs include concentric soft-seated valves,
double-offset high-performance valves and triple-offset metal-seated
valves. Each valve is selected according to the chemical composition,
concentration, temperature, pressure and required shutoff performance.

Why Use Nickel 200 or Nickel 201?

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 provide useful resistance to caustic alkalis and
many reducing or neutral media. Their high nickel content also provides
good resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking. These grades
are often considered for chemical systems where product purity and
resistance to alkaline corrosion are more important than initial material
cost.

  • Suitable for many caustic soda and alkaline process conditions
  • Useful resistance in selected reducing and neutral media
  • Good resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking
  • Available as solid nickel or nickel-wetted construction
  • Suitable for soft-seated and metal-seated butterfly valves
  • Available with manual, pneumatic or electric operation

Nickel 200 or Nickel 201: Which Grade Should Be Selected?

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 have similar corrosion behavior, but their carbon
contents and recommended temperature ranges are different. Nickel 201 has
a lower carbon content and is generally preferred when the alloy will be
exposed to temperatures above 315°C. The complete valve temperature limit
may be lower because the seat, packing and actuator components must also be
considered.

MaterialUNS designationMain differenceGeneral selection guidance
Nickel 200UNS N02200Commercially pure wrought nickel with a higher permitted carbon
content than Nickel 201.
Commonly selected for caustic alkali and reducing or neutral media
at temperatures below 315°C.
Nickel 201UNS N02201Low-carbon version of Nickel 200, reducing the risk of
graphitization during elevated-temperature exposure.
Normally preferred when the nickel components may operate above
315°C, subject to the valve pressure and temperature rating.

Applications of Nickel Butterfly Valves

Nickel butterfly valves are primarily selected for chemical systems where
alkaline corrosion, reducing conditions or product purity requirements
make carbon steel and common stainless steel unsuitable. The exact medium
must be checked before Nickel 200 or Nickel 201 is specified.

  • Caustic soda production and transfer systems
  • Alkali concentration and chemical recovery equipment
  • Chemical and petrochemical processing
  • Soap, detergent and alkaline cleaning systems
  • Food and pharmaceutical process lines requiring controlled materials
  • High-purity and demineralized water systems
  • Metallurgical and chemical treatment equipment
  • Selected gas-treatment and desulfurization process streams

Media Compatibility Must Be Confirmed

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are not universal materials for every corrosive
chemical. Strongly oxidizing acids, oxidizing salt solutions, sulfur-bearing
high-temperature media and mixed chemical streams may require another
nickel alloy, titanium, zirconium or a fluoropolymer-lined valve.

Material selection should be based on the full chemical analysis, including
contaminants and dissolved gases. Concentration, operating temperature,
pressure, flow velocity, solids content and cleaning procedures can change
the expected corrosion behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?

Nickel 201 contains less carbon than Nickel 200. The reduced carbon content
lowers the risk of graphitization during extended exposure above 315°C,
making Nickel 201 the usual choice for higher-temperature applications.

Are Nickel 200 butterfly valves suitable for caustic soda?

Nickel 200 is frequently considered for caustic soda and other alkaline
media. The final selection must account for concentration, temperature,
impurities, pressure and flow conditions.

Can WDL supply a solid nickel butterfly valve?

Yes. Depending on size, pressure rating and project requirements, WDL can
evaluate solid Nickel 200 or Nickel 201 wetted components. Nickel-clad or
nickel-wetted constructions may also be considered when technically
suitable.

Can nickel butterfly valves use pneumatic actuators?

Yes. WDL can supply nickel butterfly valves with pneumatic or electric
actuators. Solenoid valves, limit-switch boxes, positioners and air filter
regulators can be included according to the control specification.

What information is required for a quotation?

Please provide the valve size, pressure rating, medium composition,
concentration, temperature, flange standard, seat requirement, actuator
type and quantity. A chemical datasheet is recommended for mixed or
high-temperature media.
